Turkey’s Competition Commission opened an investigation against WhatsApp and its owner, Facebook Inc after the messaging app asked users for permission to let its parent company collect bag data, including phone number, location and Transaction details, etc. [ISTANBUL]

It said, “The Competition Department has opened an investigation into WhatsApp and Facebook and rejected a request to share Whatsapp data”. WhatsApp updated its terms and service last Wednesday, allowing Facebook and its subsidiaries to collect user data from WhatsApp. The deadline to agree to the new terms is 8 February. The request will be paused until the investigation is complete.

Messaging apps Signal and Telegram have since seen a spike in demand.

Erdogan quits WhatsApp

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s media office has announced that it will terminate WhatsApp after a new change in the privacy policy.

Presidential officials said the media office will update journalists from Monday via BiP, a unit of Turkish telecommunications company Turkcell. It has 1.12 million users in just 24 hours and boasts more than 53 million users worldwide.
